Halal or Not?!

ha·lal

n.  Meat or food that has been slaughtered in the manner prescribed by the shari’a.
adj.
  1. Of or being meat slaughtered in the prescribed way: a halal butcher; a halal label.
  2. In accordance with or permitted under the Islamic shari’a

That’s the meaning as per The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition. This is already debatable!

Concern With Reason

When I first thought about the idea of this website, the first issue was the halal factor of the places we go to. Can any of us really ever know if a place is halal or not?

I have noticed that anytime a brother and sister goes to a place which states they are halal, it just leads to much debate because some people consider certain things halal which others don’t (ex. some will eat in a place that says halal, others want everything halal and others wont believe until they see the halal wrapper, etc.). What I found out is that I will give the person the benefit of doubt and believe they are providing halal food. To combat the concerns of the community, I found the best solution is to have a rating system. A simple system that rates the place on how halal it is (I know this sounds totally wrong, but this is what most readers have requested). The system is pretty simple, halal factor on a scale of 1-3 crescent moons (cheesy.. I know) . Following is a simple break down of it:

  • 1 moon – place is states its halal but might not be able to verify full, might not have a full halal menu
  • 2 moons- This usual means that the place states its halal, but is debatable for one reason or another
  • 3 moons- Fully halal menu, brother/sister provided verification.

If any readers has a problem with the way things are conducted please contact us with a solution. This is a community site and it’s for everyone, so let’s improve on it. Lastly, I want to make it clear, that this website isn’t about going to “halal only” places. This site is about finding new places where we all can enjoy food and bond with friends & family.

Thanks for your time and understanding.
